STARTING A LASH BUSINESS

As a general business fact, it can take 3-5 years for a business to become profitable.
First things first... Don't quit your day job!

Or a night job. For real… keep your full time job and start brainstorming about your business on the side. Conduct some market research to learn more about your competitors and how you can stand out and most importantly, take any necessary courses to brush up on your skills.
Start with the Creative Parts
Figure out your business branding- who are you? What do you offer? Who is your audience? How can you add value? What is the general aesthetic or theme you want your business to follow? Create a business account on the social media platforms you want to work with and start playing around with content creation. Create a basic business website to reach a broader audience and create more online traffic. We recommend Google or Wix to start as they are easy to manage on your own and you can always upgrade or hire a pro later into your career when you have more capital to reinvest in the business.
Business Tools and Apps
Download any business apps or tools that will help you with managing the business digitally and creating content. We recommend Canva, Square and Google My Business. Now you're ready to launch! Your initial customers/clients will be your friends and family so reach out to them for support. Once you've built and developed your brand or business and feel confident enough to quit your full time job or drop to part time... you are heading in the right direction!
Keep going…
As they say... good things take time! My approach has always been to grow slowly and organically. Don't rack up a lot of debt if you don't need to. Most businesses fail or quit within 1 year and I firmly believe it is due to unrealistic expectations. There are some exceptions to the rule of course and there are a ton of businesses who take off right away but that's mostly luck, a lot of funding or by filling a hole in the market. Big cities like Toronto will be expensive and competitive but find your niche and start making lasting relationships within your professional or personal networks!
Legal
Register your business and get insured. It is your responsibility as a business owner to ensure you are operating legally and in accordance with the laws & public health measures set in place by your city/province/state/country. However, I am not a lawyer and cannot get deeper into that. The information is usually accessible on government websites, you can hire a lawyer or business advisor who can legally advise you.
